As we reflect on 2016, the Charlotte Community Foundation is proud to have played a part in a number of significant activities that have led to positive results in our community. Thanks to our generous donors, the Foundation was able to provide more than $827,000 in assistance through all of our charitable giving vehicles.
The Foundation awarded $50,000 in grants to nine local nonprofits through our Community Grants Program in 2016. While these grants provided significant community impact, we had to turn away 28 deserving nonprofits who had requested an additional $230,000 due to lack of unrestricted funds.
Recognizing the need for additional funding to address these grant making needs, we launched our first CHARLOTTE CARES Annual Campaign. Our goal is to not only increase the amount of grant funds available to nonprofits during our grants cycle but also to be positioned to respond to the greatest needs in our community year round. The Foundation provided more than $90,000 in scholarships to deserving local students who dream of reaching their higher education goals. We are particularly grateful to Virginia B. Andes who, through a very generous estate gift, will provide an additional $35,000 – $40,000 per year in scholarship funds in perpetuity!
In addition to our grant and scholarship activities, the Foundation hosted more than 60 different nonprofit organizations, 400 workshops and meetings, and nearly 1,000 individuals at our Virginia B Andes Training & Education Center. These organizations were able to use the facility’s meeting space at no charge, enabling them to come together to collaborate to help fulfill their missions and provide direct services to those they serve in our community.
The Charlotte Community Foundation is grateful that we have been able to assist so many individuals in need in Charlotte County – but our work is not done. As we set our goals for 2017, we look forward to having an even greater impact in Charlotte County. The Foundation will continue to identify philanthropic donors and partners whose interest is to invest in our community, and to continue our efforts with CHARLOTTE CARES. Our goal is to increase our capacity to meet the community’s needs and to develop innovative solutions that make a difference for all in Charlotte County.
I am eager to meet with individuals, business and community leaders to share thoughts on how the Foundation can play an even greater role as the Center for Philanthropy in our area in 2017. Please feel free to contact me at 941-637-0077, if you would like to discuss the Foundation and how you can participate in enhancing our community.
